Church of Sweden

A total of 75 per cent of all funeral ceremonies in the country take place in accordance with the order of the Church of Sweden. Funerals in the Church of Sweden are free of charge as a church service for members which means that the minister, musicians and premises are free of charge. Other costs are paid for by the estate.

As the number of members of the Church of Sweden decreases through withdrawal or the lack of baptism there are fewer numbers of deceased that automatically have a right to a church funeral. In accordance with the view of the Church of Sweden, the wishes of the deceased shall be respected and a church funeral shall not be performed for a person who was not a member. A church funeral can also be held in a nonconformist church for its members. Church of Sweden funerals are carried out according to a set order, read more about it at http://www.begravningar.se/att-ordna-begravning/olika-begravningsformer/svenska-kyrkan-kristen-begravning.
