Estate inventory in Växjö
The estate inventory must be submitted to the Swedish Tax Agency within four months of the death. You do not need to keep track of that date. We have our own legal advisers in-house and handle the whole process, from summoning those involved to the registered document.
What is an estate inventory?
A written record of what the person who has died owned and owed on the date of death, and of who the parties to the estate are.
Once the Swedish Tax Agency has registered it, it serves as the estate’s identity document, showing who is entitled to act for the estate. It is the document the bank wants to see before you can touch any accounts, and the one you need in order to sell a home.
How long do we have?
Three months from the date of death to the inventory meeting, the förrättning, and one more month to submit the document. Four months in total.
If you need more time it is possible to apply for an extension for the meeting itself, but the application has to reach the Swedish Tax Agency within three months of the death. An extension for submitting an inventory that has already been drawn up, on the other hand, cannot be granted.
We keep track of the dates and get in touch in good time.

What do we do and what do you do?
We do most of it.
- We establish who the parties to the estate are, and carry out a genealogical investigation if it is unclear who they are
- We summon the parties to the estate and the remaindermen to the meeting
- We establish the assets and debts as they stood on the date of death
- We hold the meeting, draw up the document and submit it to the Swedish Tax Agency
Does everyone have to attend the meeting?
No. All parties to the estate and remaindermen must be summoned, but nobody is obliged to come. Anyone who cannot or does not want to attend approves the document in writing instead.
The meeting can be held at our office on Nygatan in Växjö, at one of our other offices or at your home. Just tell us what suits when we book it.
Who signs?
Two independent estate inventory officers must attest that everything has been correctly recorded. They must not have any right to inherit from the person who has died, either by law or by will. That is why they have to be independent, not because they need to be lawyers.

What happens if the estate has no money?
Then an estate notification, a dödsboanmälan, can replace the estate inventory. It applies when the assets do not stretch beyond the funeral, and it is made by the social services department in the home municipality of the person who has died. An estate notification cannot be used, however, if the person owned real property such as a house or land.
Do not pay any invoices until you know whether the estate can cover its debts, and cancel any direct debits. The funeral and the estate inventory are priority costs and take precedence over other creditors’ claims. If you pay another invoice first, you can become personally liable.
Call us before you pay anything and we will go through what applies in your particular situation.
What does an estate inventory cost?
It depends on how large the estate is, how many parties to the estate there are and whether a genealogical investigation is needed. Call us and we will go through your situation and give you a price before you decide. The first conversation costs nothing.
What happens after the estate inventory?
The next step is the distribution of the estate, that is the division of what remains. The inventory does not distribute anything in itself, it forms the basis for the distribution. Read more about the distribution of an estate and estate administration, or about our legal help more broadly.
