Roma funeral tradition
Roma often adapt to the religion of the country they come to, so most are Catholic or Orthodox Christian. Other faiths are represented too.
What usually happens at the ceremony?
When a Roma person dies, the family wish to keep vigil for up to three days after the death. The funeral then takes place as quickly as possible.
The family and the extended family are of the greatest importance and form the basis of security in life. The person who has died is counted as part of the family community after death too.
What is useful to know?
- Adults are buried in the ground. Cremation occurs only in exceptional cases.
- There needs to be room and time for a vigil.
- The person who has died is as a rule dressed in their own clothes.
- Funerals are usually well attended.
